Spanish term
verter
Spanish to English

Poetry & Literature
the art of translation and interpreting
… el que vierte ha de transformar en sí el ánimo y sentencia del autor que vierte, y decirla en la lengua en que lo vierte como de suyo, sin que quede rastro de la lengua peregrina en que fué primero escrito, lo cual, cuán dificultoso sea de hacer, la tanta variedad de traslaciones que hay lo muestran claramente (Simón Abril, 1908: 20-21).
This is from a preface from a translation of a literary work.
Any ideas about 'verter' in such a context?
Thanks
Anna

You could say "render" for the third one, to avoid repetition.

spill
I like this option since it carries the idea of "pouring" as verter and also, due to the idiomatic expressions of "spill the beans," "spill out," it adds to the image of the word.

to convey a message
The person conveying the message to an audience in a foreign language. I know that "to translate/translator" could be an easy fix, but perhaps it could sound too direct
for the context?
In the case of the third "vierte", as in "en la lengua en que lo vierte", it could be simplified to "in the target language = in the language of the target audience".

Hi Anna,
I've agreed with Phil's suggestions, but in case you're looking for something to say other than "translate" and "render", the above are a few ideas. I'd probably also be inclined to use three different verbs for "verter" in English.

Note from asker:
Thanks Nikki, those are also some good options. I think I was trying to be poetic and keep the repetition in English, which just wasn't working for me! |
