Hi,
I own and manage EJP Translations in the UK. I am looking to extensively update my software capabilities. We obviously already use Trados but what really is the CAT tool of preference these days? Which is more user friendly? Which is more cost effective? After a year of lying low due to the recession we are back to relaunch ourselves and need a little help!

I also have a licensed copy of Trados but I prefer using Deja Vu X. I can translate Trados, Wordfast Classic & Pro, Transit and MemoQ projects with Deja Vu.

Was an all-Trados user until 2009 came around and switched to the Server version of MemoQ with excellent results so far.

It all depends whether you are working for other agencies or customers who already have their preferred tool(s). If so, you should ask them whether they will continue to use those tools and focus on them.
We are a 2-person agency and work with Transit, Across, and Trados (in order of importance). Our preferred tool is definitely Star Transit, because many file types that are supported, the TM is easy to manage, and the tool is very robust and stable (unlike Trados).

As a manager I found Trados clumsy and am reluctant to use this again in my presentation for future business to potential customers. The translators though were brilliant at using it! I think I am looking to use a new CAT tool - something that will please both project managers and translators.......all comments and suggestions welcome.

I use Wordfast too, but I like MemoQ a lot and the support is excellent.

Trados as a pain in the back to comply with the requirements of some customers, Heartsome 7.6, Anaphraseus 2 and OmegaT 2 when I am my own decider.
As I have shifted to a Mac environment, I am not very much interested in what happens "on the PC side" anymore - and certainly not in tools developed and sold by companies which also act as translation agencies . As I said: a pain in the back!

First of all, there is no ideal tool, but anyway: When it comes to working with an agency, I appreciate it when the agency has sufficient trust, knowledge, tools and flexibility to get the job done the way I want to, not forcing a workflow unto me that deviates from my usual workflow and that limits my output. The classic Trados allows me to do that in 95% of the cases, so do SDLX, Star Transit (both to a slightly lesser degree) and MemoQ.

Hi, Liz: I did a very similar survey at ProZ forums on september, 20th 2009. By the way, my tool of choose right now is MemoQ for many reasons and you can get a free trial full version lasting 30 days.

With a question like that, you're only going to get a list of translators telling you what their favourite tool is. And the translators who have answered similar questions over and over in the past will certainly not answer it again, so your responses will be limited to those who have nothing better to do than write such responses.
Why do you ask this question? What kinds of source text files do you normally work with? What does your quality control workflow look like?

The use of standard formats like TMX (for memories) or XLIFF (for bilingual files) will help us all choose the tool that matches our personal attitude and preferences, and even so be able to interoperate with other tools.
Personally I would look for a tool that can work with these standards, which are more important and prevalent every day. Personally I like MemoQ because it allows me to interoperate quite well with my all-Trados customers at the moment.

Any claim from a tool developer about interoperability with other tools and use of standards should be tested. You sometimes are faced with unpleasant surprises when you have paid for the tool. Also, I would recommend to thoroughly test the new tool before paying for it. Several manufacturers (not SDL as far as I know) offer trial periods you can use to your benefit in this sense. ▲ Collapse

Quite so... Hence my first choice (see above), which has the double advantage of being available for Macs without any additional gimmick (iow: a virtual PC machine) and of working mainly with open-source formats.
