Dear wherestip,
This notice is to inform you that on February 23, 2011, banner
ads which may have included malicious JavaScript code were
displayed on ProZ.com. You are being contacted because it appears
you viewed one of these ads.
In at least one instance, a user who viewed these banner ads
received an intrusion alert from her Norton Internet Security
software, reporting an "MSIE Java Deployment Toolkit Input
Invalidation" attack. This type of exploit could allow an attacker
to install a Java application on computers with vulnerable
versions of Java.
If you are running a vulnerable version of Java, you may have
been affected by the reported attack. The vulnerability was
introduced in Java 6 Update 10, and fixed in Java 6 Update 20. (If
you are running up-to-date anti-virus software, you may have been
protected even if you have a vulnerable version of Java.)
You are encouraged to scan your computer for malicious software
using your anti-virus program, and/or a tool such as the free
MalwareBytes Anti-Malware utility (linked from the page below).
Now they tell me! It completely wiped out my Thinkpad. Yesterday I tried numerous times running the recovery program my machine had, but was unsuccessful recovering the IBM factory preinstalled programs. By evening, I got so fed up with the long wait for the failing reinstalls, I decided to go get a new machine.
Opted for an iMac ... lost my Microsoft Office capability(the salesperson told me there is a Mac version that sells for $149), but other than that, I'm happy with the Apple machine so far. It has an impressive LED-backlit screen, and for what I want to do, the machine is perfectly fine. Hopefully Mac OS X is less vulnerable to viruses and malware.
And BTW, I didn't click on any banner ad at all. The nuisance ads simply kept popping up on their own and wouldn't go away.

| | | wherestip Amerika Birleşik Devletleri Local time: 22:39 Çince > İngilizce + ... lack-of-access-phobia | Feb 25, 2011 |

Slowly but surely, print media is becoming a thing of the past.
The whole day yesterday, I felt real antsy not being able to access the web while trying to recover my computer. There should be a name for this kind of phobia. | |

趁學校假期,兒子乘火車,不是高鐵,往華盛頓DC探朋友,臨出發前,在他的Facebook,發了一條短訊,說﹕ no WiFi on the regular trains...so will in the dark for 8 hours,我還他一句,找一個年青貌美的少女,坐在她身旁,看看有沒有問題。 | | | wherestip Amerika Birleşik Devletleri Local time: 22:39 Çince > İngilizce + ... I have to say that mishap was a huge blessing in disguise. I like the Apple system so much better, partially because it has a UNIX-based operating system.

一点儿问题也没有。 Chinese is visible right off the bat. I didn't have to do a single thing in order to read things written in Chinese. As for input, switching among major languages is built right into the system. All it takes is a few clicks in the "System Preferences" panel.
Many common functions are truly intuitive. Otherwise, it only takes a quick search on the web to figure out some of the special keystrokes.
I highly recommend it for anyone who's looking for a new system. Of course, that's without considering the issue of system compatibility with some of the popular translation tools.

Steve,
Can “Watson” defeat human linguists?
http://www.atanet.org/pressroom/news_release_jeopardy.pdf
"Watson,” the IBM computer that handily defeated two human trivia champions on the television game show Jeopardy!, has dazzled journalists and the general public with its language skills and revived the longstanding man-versus-machine debate.
...
Translators routinely use computer-assisted translation tools to work more efficiently — but reliable, high-quality automated translation is impossible without skilled humans to create and maintain the translation software and edit its input and output. Like IBM’s Jeopardy! whiz, these applications can help humans recall and manipulate data with breathtaking speed and efficiency, but they are still unable to match the sensitivity that humans bring to language. | | | wherestip Amerika Birleşik Devletleri Local time: 22:39 Çince > İngilizce + ... Yes, that would indeed be a hard proposition for the computer.
I was pretty impressed with Watson's ability to decipher the spoken word, but at times its success rate was still disappointingly less than stellar.
The 1st day's Final Jeopardy! round was a good case in point. The category was "U.S. Cities". And the answer was "Its largest airport was named for a World War II hero; its second largest, for a World War II battle.". The clues referred to Chicago's O'Hare Airport and Midway Airport respectively. But after the long pause with the famous Final Jeopardy-round music playing, the computer erroneously spit out "What is Toronto?".
Ugh!
In my opinion, it's mainly because it didn't parse the two-part sentence correctly. Garbage in, garbage out.
I'm not sure if you watched the show or not. There were probability/confidence bars for the computer displayed at the bottom of the TV screen. Most of the times when the primary bar couldn't attain a high percentage of certainty, Watson would not buzz in. It seemed to me, it was largely due to the computer not being able to correctly interpret and understand the clues.

Steve,
I haven’t watched the show yet as I’ve been quite busy in the past several weeks. I believe Watson would be further upgraded by IBM, and someday, it may pose a great challenge to human interpreters and translators. Nothing is impossible! I am wondering whether IBM has any computer that is able to play blackjack in casinos and send casino dealers to meet their Waterloo. If IBM had any, I would certainly buy one.
