Hello technogeniuses of SDL Trados,

Best regards,

Before one of the experts asks you to do so, please provide more information about your: version of Word
version of TRADOS
type of Operating System.
In addition, what new software packages are you talking about?

To start with, uncheck all templates and add-ins in Word. Leave only TRADOS, and Multiterm (if you have it and use it), checked, and try.

Save to rtf then try again Nov 25, 2008

I had the same problem multiple times. The document looks perfectly fine within Microsoft Word but for some unknown reason SDL fails to create the target itd.

My walk around to this problem was to save the doc file to rtf format, which unfortunately tends to be much larger than the original, then use this rtf to create the target itd. For me, it worked every time. The time SDL needed to upload the rtf wasn't significantly different from uploading the original doc, nor was its file size.

After completing the translation using SDL, all you have to do is create a translation preview which would output to rtf, then re-convert the translated rtf to doc.

It's funny, though, that this only happened with doc files. Neither xls nor ppt had similar problems, as far as I have experienced. Hope this works for you too.

More info and feedback to your answers Nov 25, 2008

First of all, thank you both for your attendance to my question.

Actually, this type of problems is routine with Trados, once in a while every time I download a software.

SDL Trados Synergy 2007 (version 8)
softwares recently downloaded is a set of NCH softwares (my computer is already equipped with RecordPad (licensed), but I was on the lookout for different programmes as well). Another software, I was trying this week was SameTran, which seemed not to be very compatible with my wireless keyboard either.

Let me also briefly inform you which steps I have taken before the error appeared:

Start SDL Trados Synergy 2007
New Project (name, language pairs,file)
tried two ways respectively either a)files options (ttx) or b)files options (rtf) (as J Chae suggested)

Unfortunately sofar nothing positive. And dear J Chae, I have tried loading excel documents, as well, to see if the problems were only with word documents. But obviously it isn't. To be honest, it is the first time I cannot open excel documents in Trados and it gives a solarium effect on my face (really blushed)

Hoping this clarifies any unclarity and leaves us also space for other solutions...

I am sending you my dearest greetings from Germany and thank you both.

Till tomorrow, Binnur

Oops... Nov 25, 2008

It sounds ominous.
Maybe you ought to try uninstalling and re-installing the SDL Trados suite.
If a registry is problematic, it will be resolved in the process.

Forget about Synergy Nov 25, 2008

Hi Binnur,
I strongly recommend that you forget about Synergy. Unless you're getting entire translation packages prepared by your clients (read translation agencies), working with Synergy is total waste of time. At least in my experience.

1) Launch Workbench and create a TM
2) Launch TagEditor and open the file you want to translate
3) Once you are finished, clean up your TTX (translation) file (or, alternatively, save it as target); please make sure you don't move

That should do. Synergy is prone to errors and mistakes and consumes terrible amount of time.

Interesting!
I am still reinstalling my programme. I second what you say (in regard to errors Synergy has), but should check how I can convert my files into ttx, if I don't have synergy.

I am also using SDLX, but what I normally do with that, is processing the ttx files for their easier edit and revision.

I do not like switching between CAT tools (Trados, SDLX, Star Transit and Wordfast) so much as the administration of terminology and TM is a time killing process.

Warmest regards,

Hi Binnur,
you can convert any supported files by following this procedure:
1) Launch Workbench and select the TM you are going to use for translation. This is important for TagEditor to "know" and set up the correct language pair.
2) Launch TagEditor
3) Open your files in TagEditor
4) Go to File > Save Bilingual... and in the following dialog browse to the location you want your TTXs to be saved.
5) Now your files are saved as TTX.

Hope it helps.

Kind regards!

Stanislav! Excellent trick! but I will not rule out synergy... Nov 27, 2008

Dear Stanislav!!!

I would really never think of this possibility if you had not brought me the idea!

Thank you very very much! I am sure it will contribute to others' work in this genre of problems!

But what would you do, if you have branched files? Would you still go for this method?

I find synergy very handy in this regard!

Thank you again and success in your work!

No more problems with a once properly working software! Nov 27, 2008

I am using another title for this so that it is easy to trace back to this important message. If you have a problem with your software, do not come to the idea of uninstalling everything very quickly. Things can go wrong, like in my own case.

You have another option.

On Windows menu go to start => Help and Support => Undo changes to your computer with System Restore => choose the date where you think (check beforehand the files when and where your problem appears) there was no error in your software. System restore is reversible and can be brought to whereever you like it to be. Previously uninstalled materials can also be reinstalled for restoring the system recalls back all the programmes once there.

This is a seamless method to restore your problem!

All you guys having given the effort to help me out of this problem:

I am wishing you a wonderful day!

and all you who will suffer from this type of problem, I hope this thread will help you out!

Best and warmest regards,

Binnur
