Kugelmarkierung

Deutsch > Englisch Medizin Medizin (allgemein)
This is taken from a medical report about a patient with swelling in the calf. An MRI examination was performed which showed, amongst other things:

Kugelmarkierung über dem Caput mediale des Musculus gastrocnemius, rechts.

Discussion

Dr. Christopher Kronen Mar 14, 2022:
Tis true ... You're right. This could be a less than optimal use of terminology. Based on the snippet of context provided, it also could be referring to a spherical-shaped mark/marking of some sort in the image indicative of some underlying pathology.

The asker will have to decide which of the mentioned options is most likely based on the medical record as a whole: spherical marker vs. spherical-shaped mark/marking.
Anne Schulz Mar 14, 2022:
If...! If "Markierung" is meant to refer to a marker, then you are right and we don't have to care about the details. I am sure there are markers for MRIs as well as for conventional x-ray or CT. But context is "a patient with swelling in the calf", and it would seem logical to assume in the first place that the MRI was performed in order to find the cause of this swelling. In the rush of their work, clinicians may not always grab the right word for what they want to express, and this "Kugelmarkierung" might actually be some ball-shaped image indicating hematoma or neoplastic growth in or next to the calf muscle. That's why I asked if there is any evidence that this "patient with swelling in the calf" had other problems which warrant the implantation of a marker as well.
Dr. Christopher Kronen Mar 13, 2022:
Without needing to know the precise details of what is involved here, the term spherical marker (which is correct) could be appropriately qualified. MRI-visible spherical marker comes up frequently in the literature.

However, since this apparently occurs in the context of an MRI that is being performed, the MRI visibility is already implied. It would not be a stainless steel or other metallic marker in MRI. I have heard of gadolinium-filled spherical markers being used during robotic surgery.
uyuni Mar 12, 2022:
@Anne Good point. Let alone the fact that a stainless steel marker (c.f. Barbara's source) must under no circumstances be used in an MRI imaging study...
Anne Schulz Mar 12, 2022:
Is there any evidence from context, that a marker has previously been introduced into the calf?

when attached to OEM surgical instruments, these navigation markers act as triangulation points for the instrument within the OR space. This is due to the passive marker sphere’s unique retro-reflective surface, which allows the Polaris optical tracker to ‘see’ it during tracking. The passive marker sphere and Polaris optical tracker are used together as an end-to-end solution to localize, detect and track the OEM surgical instruments with pinpoint accuracy.

Marker Spheres

Special reflective spheres attached to human anatomy and physician instruments during navigated surgery; an infrared camera picks up their location and motion. Also known as reference spheres.
