Spanish term

RMSPS

Spanish to English Social Sciences Medical: Health Care Honduras
This has got to be a location in Honduras. I'm almost certain SPS is "San Pedro Sula", but ¿región marítima? Or what? This appears in a public health report written by civil servants who presume everyone in an international body should know what they're talking about.

Any help appreciated and native confirmations/readings particularly welcome. Thanks in advance.

Discussion

Charles Davis Oct 5, 2017:
@Marie That's an interesting point. I've found one example where it appears with "Salud" in the name and is abbreviated as RMSSPS:

"Unidad Compra Región Metropolitana de Salud de San Pedro Sula No.20
Siglas SESAL-RMSSPS"
http://www.honducompras.gob.hn/Entidades/UnidadCompra.aspx?I...

But none of RSMSPS. Clearly it's normally just left as RMSPS. The only issue (not a major one) is whether it's desirable or proper to include "Health" or "Healthcare" in the translation. That's a judgement call, as they say.
Marie Wilson Oct 5, 2017:
@ Charles I don't know enough about it to agree with your answer; I just did a brief search and took a minimalist approach, whereas you saw the bigger picture! "Salud" did keep popping up, (Región Metropolitana de Salud San Pedro Sula), but it didn't seem to fit RMSPS, too many Ss. I don't doubt your research though.
Charles Davis Oct 5, 2017:
@Marie OK, sorry!
Marie Wilson Oct 5, 2017:
It's just an anecdote, I'm not trying to make any point. Of course nobody would understand it.
Charles Davis Oct 5, 2017:
The World Bank has translated it and made an English initialism from its translation. That initialism could be used here if you think people would understand it; I'm a bit doubtful about that.

Every one of the 30-odd Internet references to "Región Metropolitana de San Pedro Sula" is healthcare-related. It is clearly a healthcare area and not an administrative area for any other purpose, otherwise it would appear somewhere in relation to non-healthcare-related matters.
Marie Wilson Oct 5, 2017:
Here it's MASPS:

Although this reference isn't about health.
Charles Davis Oct 5, 2017:
Yes, strictly speaking it's an acronym if you pronounce it as a word and an initialism if you don't (or can't). But in common parlance acronym is often used for both (as M-W indicates).

Thanks to both of you It WOULD be. Another acronym easy to resolve was DCM (distrito central metropolitano) and RMDC. What I really hated was Google insisting that I needed MAPS (i.e., that "RMSPS" must be "MAPS").

Región Metropolitana San Pedro Sula > San Pedro Sula Metropolitan Healthcare Region / Area

For the expansion of RM, see for example here:

"Entidad Secretaría de Salud
Unidad Compra GERENCIA ADMINISTRATIVA REGIÓN METROPOLITANA SAN PEDRO SULA [...]
Contacto SESAL-RMSPS CONTADOR MIGUEL ARTURO MONTOYA LEIVA"
http://www.honducompras.gob.hn/Procesos/Proceso.aspx?Id=MQAA...

This doc also contains both the abbreviation and the full form:
http://www.honducompras.gob.hn/DocsRCG/40726_ORDENDECOMPRA#0...

But "Región Metropolitana" is not an administrative territorial division of Honduras, which is divided into departamentos, subdivided into municipios. It's a healthcare region or area; it's short for "Región Metropolitana Sanitaria" (or "Región Santaria Metropolitana"). So I think you should put the word "healthcare" in there. I think "región" could either be literally "region" or "area"; in the UK, NHS healthcare areas are more or less county-sized and are subdivided into districts.

Note from asker:
Yes, this is about healthcare regions.
