French term

délai d'amortissement court

French to English Bus/Financial Finance (general) Specifications for a building product
Within the overall context of a set of tender specifications for a major building project. I am partly translating and partly correcting previous translations from a TM.

This is listed one of the 'plus points' of a building product — as it happens, pipe insulation.

I understand perfectly well what they mean by it: "our product is so reasonably-priced, it will quickly pay for itself"; something along the lines of 'rapid ROI', I should have thought (but that expression hardly fits in my context).

My problem is simply that the previous translator has translated it as 'short depreciation period', but I'm worried that might be read the wrong way round, as "will wear out quickly" — because of the double meaning of 'depreciation' in EN, in both its technical, financial meaning and in its more everyday sense.

This is BENELUX FR, from a document intended for a European readership.

philgoddard Mar 16, 2015:
Your suggestion of "rapid return on investment" is fine.
Daryo Mar 15, 2015:
@Tony you are right about 'short depreciation period'
A perfect example how the "normal/standard" translation can be totally wrong, although there is some basic similarity between "getting your money back" trough depreciation of assets and through savings on costs.
kashew Mar 15, 2015:
@Tony Your reading sounds right, as in ... data show that its thermostat ***pays for itself*** in less than two years.. ... temperature management reduces heating costs by 10-12 percent...
Can we see your exact context please?

short payback period (or time)

I always used this expression when I worked in the pulp and paper industry. See: http://www.accountingformanagement.org/payback-method/

for a description.

short cost recovery time

Example sentence:

... extraordinary energy savings - optimal lighting quality and ergonomics at work - simple design, installation and use - short cost recovery time.

These benefits mean a short cost recovery time for this new product.

Thanks for your contribution Ana! I feel sure this would be a good solution in some contexts, but wasn't the best fit in my particular instance.

Thanks for your contribution, Liz! Because of the potential ambiguity of 'repayment' (as indeed highlighted by your initial ref.), I don't think this would be the best solution in my particular instance.

will quickly pay for itself

the idea is more

"our product is so efficient [in preventing heat-dissipation] that it will quickly pay for itself [through the reduced costs of heating]"

this insulation is probably significantly more expensive, but it also ways better at preventing the heat vanishing in thin air, so the additional cost of putting a better thermal insulation is quickly recovered from savings on reduced loss of heat.

Thank you for your suggestion, Daryo! I am quite sure you have interpreted the meaning correctly, and in many contexts, this would be the best translation solution; however, it would sit slightly uneasily in the much more formal register of my document, so I shan't be able to use it on this occasion.
