German term

Kasten

German to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering
I would like to ask some of you Brits. out there what you call the holders for bottled beverages.
In the US we call them 'cases' - as in 'a case of beer'.
Got a client who thinks they should be called 'crates' but have never heard of that usage before.
"A crate of beer"????

I think it depends what kind of container the bottles are in, but you can certainly have a crate of beer. A crate is a rigid container with spaces for the individual bottles.

A crate of beer is what we used in Ireland.

Yes, 'a crate of beer' is common usage in British English for 'Bierkasten'.

crate

of beer is fine since (mostly plastic) crates are designed for transporting or storing just like the German Kästen. A typical case, by contrast, is just paper and cardboard.
Note from asker:
Although I was specifically interested in learning what British English speakers have to say, it is very interesting for me to hear that American English speakers are also familiar with the term crates in this context.
Peer comment(s):

agree Armorel Young : Wine usually comes in cases, beer (like milk in the good old days of milk bottles) in crates. A case usually has a top (lid), while a crate is open at the top.

Exactly. I do understand the asker's confusion though because here in the US, they only seem to be selling beer in cases even when a crate might come in handy
neutral Lancashireman : Asker: "I would like to ask some of you Brits out there..." // For a deutscher Wahlamerikaner, your command of English is really rather good. But asker's criteria should be respected.

It's getting silly, isn't it? Any other cunning ideas to discredit my entries?//Okay, I accept that considering that Richard also explained his stance on the matter. But I'd still argue it looks better if 'enforcement issues' are left to askers.
