Discussion

Nora Morrison Sep 7, 2013:
Hi Guys, @Johannes: True, these cover all possible risks, equipment running, or not. However, to the English native ear, these might sound a bit "awkward?", hence the other proposals, which, albeit more English, nevertheless do not precisely reflect the (non-specific) Austrian warning message. I would agree that covering all possible risks supersedes linguistic smoothness.

@Marc: *Hands off!* or *Keep hands clear!* would also cover all potential risks. But if the sign was posted, say, near a control handle/button close to a (dangerous) opening, these would be confusing. Therefore, you might consider asking Client for more detailed specifications. It is a fact that English is precise, while German (i.p. Austrian!) can be painfully vague at times.
Johannes Gleim Sep 6, 2013:
Yes, for me it's enough The risk is probably of mechanical or dynamical nature, like moving parts. But the machine may exhibit further risks, like touching live parts. So, a warning "Do not touch (the inside)!" or "Do not reach into!" is sufficient, to exclude all dangers inherent to the machine, either running or not.

But you will remark, that most peers add something like "running machine", even not stated and not considering that hold-on machine may also contain dangerous parts, like live parts.
Marc Svetov (asker) Sep 6, 2013:
Vacuum packaging machines Dear Johannes and other colleagues,
the sentence is unfortunately very brief. It concerns vacuum packaging machines, conveyorized machines, i.e. belt machines, made in Austria. Isn't that enough context? Anyway, thanks for all your help! I appreciate it greatly.
Johannes Gleim Sep 6, 2013:
@ Marc Some peers are complaining and disagreeing, as the kind of danger is not translated and that some proposals are incomplete phrases. But you posted a incomplete phrase without object to translate. How can we anticipate the object of the phrase? In fact, we do not know, what the danger consists of. Two peer added "equipment" or "machinery", but this is only a guess and is no real translation as the phrase has no object.

I asked you twice ago, but did not got any answer! Please help us to help you!
Marc Svetov (asker) Sep 5, 2013:
There is no further wording There is no further wording. It concerns vacuum packaging machines -- i.e. conveyorized automated machines, belt machines -- for the vacuum-packaging of foodstuffs. There are only two words for the warning sign: "Nicht hineinfassen." That's it.
Johannes Gleim Sep 5, 2013:
No further context? Is the machine running? What are the full wordings? Please post the text around!
Marc Svetov (asker) Sep 5, 2013:
Vacuum packaging machines Vacuum packaging machines, Vakuumverpackugnsmaschinen. Conveyorized machines, belt machines, etc., for foodstuffs.
Nora Morrison Sep 5, 2013:
Context matters ... or does it?
Ich plädiere für *Keep Hands Clear!*
Johannes Gleim Sep 5, 2013:
... bei laufender Maschine ... if the machine is running.

Is this the full phrase or not? Can you inform us about the type of machinery, the type of risk and the context around this warning?

Note: During my professional career as approval engineer I have often read and edited Safety Warnings. I do remember both phraseologies such as:
“Do not touch live parts”
“Do not touch inside …”
“Do not reach into … (anything, running or not)
Peer comment(s):

neutral Cilian O'Tuama : No proof. And both your examples are not proper English as they stand; they require an object.

I have three times "do not touch inside" and eight times "do not reach into". Which reference is criticized? The German phrase has no object either.
neutral Nora Morrison : @Cilian: not necessarily proof, but a warning that specific settings require specific warnings?
5 hrs
all depends on the particular risk, which the asker did not specify yet, even being asked for.
disagree Lancashireman : Even if the machine operator does not "touch" the inside, his/her hand may be injured by moving parts. "Do not reach into" is syntactically incomplete.
7 hrs
"Nicht hineinfassen" is incomplete either. I cannot add a subject, the risk is not disclosed (moving, hot, cold or live parts, etc). We have to translate an incomplete phrase. / Live parts are always dangerous, even the machine has stopped.
