to strike a distinct/an appropriate/a fine balance in terms of lighting

This reads well to me in the context and I think that's what it means, since it then goes on to list both extremes to be avoided..

thank you Ana! ;-)
neutral Jim Tucker (X) : "diferenciado" is probably "subtle" or "graded", or even "varied"//OK, but "different" is not precise here; needs the sense of "differentiated". (Not a false friend.)

Yes, "varied" or "different", thank you Jim! Careful with false friends here..."in different ways" or "differently" captures the meaning. Thank you!

to nuance / play with the light (effects)

I presume they mean to create light effects, use it to subtle effect, etc. here

google doesn't like 'nuance' as a verb, although I do (!)
Peer comment(s):

neutral HugoSteckel : this isn't a genuine "neutral".. just to add, the OED recognizes "nuance" as a verb and places its origins decades back, so you needn't worry :-) it's one of my favourites, too

that's as gratifying as an 'agree' to me!

to create specific effects with the light

diferenciado seems to suggest 'specific' or 'distinguishably seperate' rather than just 'different', and tratamiento suggests that the light is being 'treated', or 'utilized' in these specific ways to crete the specific effects listed after the phrase.
