Italian term

gioco combinatorio

Italian to English Other Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
"Il processo di globalizzazione economica e culturale favorisce l’esposizione a valori, idee e prodotti e marche provenienti da ogni parte del mondo. Questo rende possibile un “gioco combinatorio” che mette insieme influenze provenienti da una molteplicità di ambienti".

TIA for any interesting suggestions (possibly an "official" translation, if there is one).

Discussion

Paul O'Brien (asker) Apr 19, 2009:
ok "pick & mix" is also an accepted expression, including in this context. here they were talking about blending cultures, so i thought that "mix" was slightly better than "choose" in this case. other than that, yes, you're probably right.
cilantro Apr 19, 2009:
Thanks Pauley Be careful, though. The offered wordings are accepted expressions in use; on the one hand you want to avoid using cliches as much as possible, but on the other it will be harder for your readers to understand if you pick and mix the idiomatic expressions.

pick and choose

According to context you can build your sentence using this expression to explain the advantage to "pick and choose" from the best of every world, be it a product, brand, idea, or cultural value.
Example sentence:

Multi-culturalism and globalization enable to selectively pick and choose the best aspects of every society

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "in the end i came up with "pick & mix" (which i left in inverted commas) and it was cilantro's proposal that brought it to mind. "

mix and match

Unless I've completely misread this, it has nothing to do with game theory. The argument is simply that globalisation multiplies the possible combinations of cultural stimuli.

I would probably use something better than "this means", but that is not the question.

interactive puzzle?
Note from asker:
seems like it's been translated here as "children's puzzle" which, in my view, is excellent in that specific context, though i don't think it will work in this one. what do you reckon?
there's "Combinatorial Game Theory", but i'm not sure it's applicable here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combinatorial_game

but also a literary style or method (see below)

Note from asker:
yeah, it's a very italian term. i couldn't find any translations of it. but i like the two suggestions above in the context.
Peer comments on this reference comment:

agree Kevin Pendergast : Admittedly, the specific analogy is lost if my answer is used. At the same time, I don't think preserving that specific analogy is essential in this context.

Getting in a quick ref to Italo Calvino that worked well without a footnote would be a bit difficult ;-)
