I cannot find any suitable references for any of the ideas I've had. I think I'm maybe thinking of poor, literal translations- 'handling', 'manoeuvre', 'operation', or maybe it is one of these... either that, or I'm being slightly dense and missing the obvious.
Any suggestions, therefore, would be most helpful as I'm not doing too well! :)

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "All your suggestions were very helpful, really. In the end I emailed my client and we've agreed that it's the same as application techniques, so I can omit. I would've used 'manual operations' though, so points for patricia"

aspects or factors?

Yes, it is a difficult one. I think maybe there's more involved here than just touching up, but am not sure what!
Note from asker:
Yes, my thoughts exactly...Like the 'handling actions', the ways of handling the dyes, but can't grasp how this would go in English! Thanks Clare.

handiwork

going from manos obra - working with hands?
Note from asker:
This is exactly what it is: you've got it, but not sure I can use this term for the dye aplication process, as it smacks of handicrafts and such, rather than something 'surgical', so to speak...
