I'm understanding this to basically say that when the head lawyer found out that this lawyer made a mistake in the handling of the case, that he declared him as being negligent and this resulted in him being fired from xxx law firm?? Is this what you get from this, or am I off base here??????

was due to neglect and he fired me
Yes, you ar right. Obedeció has nothing to do with obey, but rather with "it was caused" or "due to..."
Hope it helps.

was due to my negligence in handling this case, he stopped trusting me
You notice that I basically copied Mr. Forstag's answer. I usually see "retirar la confianza" in parliamentary democracy contexts, where the head of the legislature serves with the expressed trust of the legislature. I understand in this case that the head honcho, when he took away the "confianza", basically stopped authorizing him to do anything. As a result, he was fired.
