hidrógenos de sulfuro

Spanish to English Science Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng elementos

Discussion

sugrass Feb 2, 2007:

What is hydrogen sulfide?

Hydrogen sulfide is a very harmful, colorless gas with a strong, "rotten-egg" odor. This gas is released naturally be decaying plants, animals, and sewage. It can be formed in small amounts when coal and oil are burned. Hydrogen sulfide occurs naturally in sewer gas, swamp gas, manure pits, volcanoes, and fossil fuels. Hydrogen sulfide is also created during the production of oil, rayon, paper and leather. Some industries use hydrogen sulfide to make other chemicals.

On page 5 of the reference below you can see that 'hidrógenos de sulfuro' is listed also as 'ácido sulfhídrico', and also includes the formula H2S,...Hydrogen Sulfide
Peer comment(s):

agree Zareh Darakjian Ph.D. : It is acceptable due to the existence of an exception to the rule in this case. // Thank you PeterIII!

Regardless of what goole says, if we are going to go by the correct nomenclature as specified by chemical societies, then there are two acceptable names:

1) If H2S is a gas, then it is dihydrogen sulfide.
2) If H2S is dissolved to make an aquesous solution (acid), then it is hydrosulfuric acid, jut like hydrochloric acid.

Peer comment(s):

agree sugrass : Zareh, your answer is OK. "Dihydrogen sulfide " is also correct since the ONLY formula for this compound is H2S. It 's just another nomenclature, so both names (hydrogen or dihydrogen...) are chemically correct:-)
