I would assume as per their signs they are translating for the media, i.e. bridging the gap between protestors and media who might not speak the local language?

The use of "so" at the beginning of the statement "So, this is apparently happening" implies that something was previously said to which this is the follow-up. What was previously said? I've looked and looked but I can't find it.
