Hi everyone, I currently work in education but have done some ad hoc interpreting recently for friends which I found enjoyable and rewarding and am tempted to apply for the DPSI online course, though I have a couple of questions:
1. I have a degree in Italian literature and have lived and worked in the UK for 10 years, is this likely to be an appropriate level of qualification for me and do you have any feedback on the course provider?

2. Once qualified is it difficult to establish regular (albeit part-time) work and what is a typical hourly / daily rate?
3. I would be interest in specialising in health - does this have any impact on the questions above?
Many thanks for taking the time to read (and hopefully reply), Alessandra. ▲ Collapse

I am working as phone interpreter. From the comfort of home and naturally part time. For medical specializations: 3 prerequisites are a. have to complete NCIHC National standards of practice and Code of Ethics training program, b. test on medical terminologies in the language offered- this will be conducted the interpreting company themselves. c. continuous upgrading in terms of medical vocabulary. If you are in USA, , HIPAA Awareness for Business Associates training and HIPAA and Medicare part D fraud, waste and abuse (FWA) prevention training should be completed. Unlike court depositions or court cases which may be up to half day or more, medical interpretations are of short duration like 15 mts to 2 hrs so hourly rate is more appropriate but paid in terms of minute rate. 15 mts is for say periodic checkup, 2 hrs is say from patient admission to moving the patient to OR. Irrespective of the scenario- legal, medical, business-general, your language register should match the client's on one end and the LEP ( low English proficient) person at the other end, so by default they are not going to be highly literary. ▲ Collapse
