| | | I don't have a photo in my profile but a logo | Jun 19, 2021 |
I’m not promoting my face, I’m selling a service and I don’t think clients select me because of my physical appearance but (hopefully) by my ability as a translator. | | | neilmac İspanya Local time: 21:42 İspanyolca > İngilizce + ...
As can be seen from my profile image, I prefer an avatar or jokey image to an actual photo of my grisly phizzog

I've never understood what that thing is. Jokey, is it? Why?

It shouldn't be, but it helps to show that you're a real person. Even a logo or an avatar is better than no picture at all.
As much as I wish that the ability would be the only thing that matters, that's just not how it works these days unless the clients already know and trust you. And even then there are still many others who are no less able, so every detail adds to the overall impression (or "brand" as they call it now). | | | Depends why you're here | Jun 19, 2021 |
It's probably important if you are using the site to raise awareness of your services - you will be more memorable with a picture and it shows you are a real person. If you're just here to chat to other translators, not so much. | | | You have to demonstrate that you are real | Jun 19, 2021 |
As a freelancer operating globally, you have to demonstrate that you are a real person with a real name, face, and background, instead of a pretender. For your clients and prospects, you have to move out of the typical Internet anonymity, in order to be trusted. So if you want to use your profile to win clients, you need to use your real name and a profile picture. | | | Muriel Vasconcellos (X) Amerika Birleşik Devletleri Local time: 12:42 İspanyolca > İngilizce + ... I think it's important | Jun 19, 2021 |
Personally, I feel much more comfortable communicating with a colleague who uses a photo than one with a logo. Since I have a strong preference myself, I assume that the same is true of clients.

Makes No Difference At All | Jun 19, 2021 |
At least when it comes to being awarded (there's that pesky word again!) projects. I had a lot more work, some through proz, when I had NO profile picture. But I think that has to do with the fact that agencies were paying higher rates back then (and I don't bid on low-paying projects anymore), and because those were pre-pandemic days, when European authors were selling enough of their books to justify getting them translated.

We are usually taught not to add pictures to our CVs, which is correct. But it took some time before I learned that this rule does not apply to internet profiles in general. Yes as it helps you stand out. I prefer to communicate with people using their own picture instead of animals or default photos as I believe the photo could show your personality to some extend. | | | Profile Pictures Could Lead To Age Discrimination | Jun 19, 2021 |

Since age discrimination is so prevalent in relation to older workers, whether they want to work as translators or almost anything else, I would think what you propose might backfire for them, no matter how qualified they are (based on years and years of experience), or how good-looking they might still appear to their contemporaries, or even to a certain brand of younger people.

People who define the professionals they hire by their age are not my clients, and I don't want clients like that. If they discriminate per age, they'll certainly dicriminate per other factors and have a series of other undesired practices. Not my clients, not my market. | | | Philip Lees Yunanistan Local time: 22:42 Yunanca > İngilizce
Differing opinions here, but I prefer just to admit I don't know. I did try a web search to see whether any studies had been done to determine the importance of a professional profile picture, but all I found were references to what makes the "best" profile picture, and nothing about whether it was necessary or important to have one or not. ... However, having said all that, I doubt that many clients have selected me as a translator on the basis of my profile photo. ▲ Collapse
I always feel disappointed when I do not see the person's picture.
However, somehow my own fell out of this forum. I've already notified the staff, but nothing happens. | | | Konudaki sayfalar: [1 2] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Do you think that having a profile picture is important?
