If you had to recommend just one monolingual Brazilian Portuguese dictionary, which would it be? Assume the criteria are quality of content, followed by breadth of content (ie smaller and better takes priority over larger but less reliable). Any thoughts?

If I had to pick just one... Jan 30, 2012

...it would be the "Aurelio".

(I would not pick just one, though - ever).

Aurélio Jan 31, 2012

Yes, definitely this would be the best. I am talking about the Aurelião (paper edition) and not the shorter Aurelinho.

The best bet is to have the Big Three: Aurélio, Houaiss and Sacconi (full editions). Michaelis also has a dictionary, and there is even a Portuguese dictionary written by former Brazilian President Jânio Quadros.

I agree with Aurélio.

(I hope this question will not be off-topic)

Could you suggest me which one, in your opinion, is the best monolingual Portuguese dictionary (not Brazilian Portuguese)?
I need to buy a present to a student of Portugese language.

Thanks

Hi, Gaetano. For me the best Portuguese dictionary is the one from Porto Editora.

As to the real topic at hand, I agree with Paul Dixon:

Although I would recommend against the Michaelis; if you have the three above, Michaelis doesn't add anything to them.
