Hello,

I am planning to buy a TM English-Spanish and I am faced with the option of tmx. or sdl. format.

As I will be translating with Trados, are there any restrictions to use tmx format with Trados 2009?

In general terms what is the difference between both formats? Since tmx seems to be a more flexible format what are the advantages of buying an sdl TM?

Are you buying a dictionary or a glossary? What are you going to do with the TM?

I have never heard that a translator buys a TM. TM = translation memory is built while translating. Often clients send you a tm along with a translation job, when the documents have to be updated. Then you don't have to translate old parts yourself, but let the software translate from TM.

TMX is the exchange format for translation memories. All tools can use tmx-files. And every tools has own formats, like tmw for Trados or itd for SDLX.

I'm surprised that you are not simply given both formats by the TM vendor.

The advantage of Trados' own TM format is that if your text contains formatting that is also in the TM, then Trados' own TM format would potentially give higher fuzzy matches in some cases than TMX would. However, this is likely only the case if the TM is given to you by the client or a translator who has worked on the specific project that you're going to work on.

There are no restrictions in Trados 2009 for reading TMX files, and TMX files can be read by other utilities too. So I would go for the TMX.

Studio has TMX export which seems to work OK, so why not go with the native format then? You can always export if you need to get the TM in other tools.
So, if you're using Studio anyway, you may as well get the sdltm. If the TM is very large and your computer hardware is weak, you may be in trouble when importing a TMX so it's marginally safer/more convenient.
Anyway, I would just ask for both. If you're paying for the TM, it stands to reason that you should get it in every format they have.
