Hello all,

I am considering undertaking some training in proofreading and was wondering if anyone had any experience with this UK-based distance learning course. It's difficult to find any reviews online other than those provided on the Centre's own website.

I know this isn't necessarily translation-related but I'm sure there are lots of translators who work as proofreaders and copy-editors too, and would be interested in hearing their thoughts.

IMHO:-)

I personally would prefer the copyediting course, seems to cover more ground and be more useful for translators.

Hello Bilbo Baggins and thanks for your post.

I'm actually looking into this with a view to working as a proofreader of publications by UK publishers, not specifically for the proofreading of translations. It's something I have an interest in, and I feel that, as a freelancer, I could combine the two services.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who already does this, as I'm sure there are other translators who also work in this field.

I work as an English editor of translated texts and was, strangely, just looking at the SfEP website (thinking about doing some courses myself as I have no official qualifications, just experience). They mention and recommend this course on there, but they also employ the person who runs the course, so possibly this isn't much of an independent recommendation.

I don't know much about the SfEP, I'm not a member, but it looks as if it is the recognised body for professional proofreaders, so perhaps it would be worth doing the course. They also have their own courses available to do.

Not sure how much work you would be able to find - proofreading seems to be something everyone thinks they can do and therefore I think a lot of people take courses like this.... I guess translating experience would give you the advantage though! ▲ Collapse
