Wildfires in Texas Sep 7, 2011

I wish we had some rain down here. It's been an unrelenting drought in Texas all year long.

Steve,

Oh, yes. It's been a horrible drought in the entire state overall. Lately, we've also been facing a dire situation here in Austin.

Not only did Texas not benefit from the rain of Tropical Storm Lee because it headed east towards Mississippi, but the winds it created just whipped up the existing Texas wildfires. Numerous wildfires in the state have been burning for more than 300 days, and so far this year have destroyed more than 3.5 million acres. They say that is bigger than the State of Connecticut.

A wildfire extending for more than 24 miles in Bastrop is still not under control as of today. More than 500 homes in that area burned to the ground over the labor day weekend. Across the canyon from where your house is, 24 houses burned to the ground in the Steiner Ranch subdivision. Ouch!

Yesterday afternoon we suddenly had a power outage. Without any TV or Internet access, I had no idea what was going on. Later in the evening, I found out that there was a brush fire that started right in the neighborhood park. Fortunately, the firefighters had the fire under control in no time.

~*~*~*~*~*

p.s. Yueyin, FYI, the latest is that 24 homes were destroyed at Steiner Ranch, and additionally 34 homes were damaged. Also, there was another fire in the Spicewood/Pedernales Bend area, which is said to be 100% contained as of now. The # of homes burnt to the ground in Bastrop officially stands at 1386 as of Sept. 8th ...

Steve,

I believe the fire my son saw from our home is exactly the fire in Steiner Ranch. Steiner Ranch is also a very nice residence area. My son also mentioned the massive horrible fire in Bastrop. I hope those fires could be put out as soon as possible. It seems the fire at Steiner Ranch has already been put out.

Yueyin,

Indeed. The homes in the Steiner Ranch subdivision are upwards of $400,000. It's a beautiful place to live.

I looked at that subdivision when I first moved back to Austin. At the time, the houses were still in the $200,000 range. I nixed the location as an option because it was a little too far away from work.

A beautiful area Sep 8, 2011

Steve,

Yes, Steiner Ranch is indeed a beautiful place to live. You could get a wonderful view of the surrounding areas, even downtown Austin in the distance, on the highlands. Some homes over there could be worth well over one million. It is true that Austin has seen a big change in the housing market in the past two decades or so. Nowadays, it would be very difficult to find a single-family home for under $400,000 in the area near Steiner Ranch and Lake Travis.

Chris,

No, that's not what Yueyin and I were talking about. All it means is that particular area was attractive to buyers, and the homes in that subdivision appreciated in a short period of time.

If you don't have that kind of money, you don't have to buy there. There are plenty of other nice subdivisions around Austin that are much more affordable.

Dec 3, 2011

I believe when you guys say "水深火热", you're referring to the inflationary pressure people are feeling in their daily life.

Since the 2008 financial crisis, it's been nothing but deflationary as far as the U.S. housing market is concerned. There's been a persistent and severe housing glut caused by bad mortgage loans and foreclosures. It will still take years for the excess inventory to unwind.

http://www.steinerranch.com/new-homes/emerald-ridge
Pricing begins in the high $400's and sizes range from 2,600 to 4,600 square feet

http://bj.51f.com/ershoufang/205701911112353522.html

Too close for comfort Jun 28, 2012

Yueyin,

Indeed these are the most destructive wildfires in Colorado's state history. I think one of the earlier ones started 2 or 3 weeks ago, somewhere close to Fort Collins. Another big one right now is near Colorado Springs, where 36,000 people had to be evacuated. From what I heard, yet another one is burning near Boulder. I hope it doesn't spread and affect you guys. In any event, stay safe.

Colorado has lots of forest parks and woodlands, and the mountain terrain doesn't help. The devastating wildfires are still raging out of control. It must be heartrending for those who lost their houses - I read that some of them are only finding out through real-time images of Google Earth. I also heard in the news that tomorrow Obama is going to CO to survey the damage.

Flagstaff fire Jun 29, 2012

Steve,

Thanks for your concern. We are all fine. My son’s home is far from the Flagstaff fire in Boulder and mine is even farther. My heart goes out to those who lost their homes.
