I have little time for those who believe in pseudosciences (biorhythms, feng shui, numerology, hollow/flat/banana-shaped Earth, astrology, and a hundred more, though I do accept that some - such as homeopathy and acupuncture - may have placebo effects if properly administered), I am not open-minded towards various forms of intolerance or discrimination, many political, ideological and religious ideas and dogmas, most conspiracy theories (the ones I know about), science-deniers (anti-vaxxers, cli... See more I have little time for those who believe in pseudosciences (biorhythms, feng shui, numerology, hollow/flat/banana-shaped Earth, astrology, and a hundred more, though I do accept that some - such as homeopathy and acupuncture - may have placebo effects if properly administered), I am not open-minded towards various forms of intolerance or discrimination, many political, ideological and religious ideas and dogmas, most conspiracy theories (the ones I know about), science-deniers (anti-vaxxers, climate-change deniers, etc.), and so on. However, as far as translation is concerned, I am apparently more open than some to various technologies and I will quite happily use dictionaries, glossaries, Word macros, machine translation, thesauruses, a CAT tool, ChatGPT, voice recognition, keyboard shortcuts, translation memories and books, and sometimes I consult my wife too. I'm open to anything that might be of assistance. I've heard some colleagues (proudly?) say they won't touch artificial intelligence, CAT tools or machine translation and have never been really sure why they say this. When ChatGPT is of no use, I don't use it. I do have a modicum of open-mindedness but there's so much I am not "open-minded" about that I probably need to put myself on the "No" or "False" side. ▲ Collapse
I view myself as an open-minded person and I believe working as a translator and having to deal with some subject matters has helped broadening my mind.

Even if I could afford to hold an open-minded stance | Jun 1 |
I would never be allowed to express it: Comrade Major would be calling me right away, to a phone with no battery. Of course my views are not just any views but only the right views | | | Elodie Ndélia Fransa Local time: 22:36 Üye (Jan 2024) İngilizce > Fransızca + ...
For this profession, you have to be. Translation can challenge you in more ways than one, not just linguistically.

So, it's like this: Open: accept and embrace everything. Not open: deny everything and dismiss it without scrutiny (except for a specific list of dogmas like Science, Democracy... can't cite the whole thing but I'm sure this list is found somewhere). This seems to spring from the Bologna education system which won't give you an ontological basis in life; you don't get to build a total worldview (unless you really want one and take the labor of building it yourself) that will let you filter things, accepting some and rejecting others. To me, being open simply means that while you may be a firm believer in something you'll still find in yourself the courage to reconsider your belief whenever some new input shows to your satisfaction that you're somewhat or even completely wrong. Not being open is okay though. Everything's okay today except what the Big Brother says is not

I have definite ideas on ethics, aesthetics, human rights and rock music, among other things. I think artificial intelligence has the potential to be a useful tool or a terrible scourge, depending upon how it is applied. | | | Kay Denney Fransa Local time: 22:36 Fransızca > İngilizce
I'll keep an open mind until I have sufficient knowledge to decide on the correct stance. Empathy is usually what informs my stance. | | | Alba Gila İspanya Local time: 22:36 İngilizce > İspanyolca + ...
