So I tend to use an avatar whenever I can get away with it.

I don't have a profile picture Nov 13, 2023

I don’t have a photo on my profile, I have a logo. I don’t think a different logo or a good photograph would get me more work. That's not why clients come to me. I must say also that on the few occasions I have outsourced work to other translators I have been more interested in their qualifications to do the job than in their appearance.

There was some glitch with my profile picture a while ago, and I ended up replacing it. It has been my policy to limit pictures of me - and information in general - on the Internet, so I have only used one picture on all my profiles. It was in fact taken so I could use it on Proz.com, before you could assume that everyone had a digital camera!

The picture you see now is only a couple of years old, while the other one has been around for more than twenty years. The ´new´ one was taken as a passport photo, so it looks a bit serious, but it fits my policy.

I sometimes consider reintroducing the picture I still use everywhere else, so perhaps I do care about how I look!

Yes, but... Nov 13, 2023

Speaking as someone who only came out as a real human being here in the last fortnight, I can tell you that it's not a decision you take lightly. So many things to agonise over. Gotta look serious, but approachable. Friendly, but still professional. Enigmatic, charismatic and hot, but without overdoing it. It's literally a minefield.

And then you realise that pretty much all the photos you have of yourself are selfies on a beach with a loved one or with friends in a pub, and that yo

It used to be a greyish silhouette of a something between a man and woman, but I like it the way it is now.

That is, if you're going to have a profile picture, I'd hope you care about your appearance. Whether you should have a profile picture in the first place, at least on this site, is another question (and clearly another poll).

Thanks for the laugh Christopher. I went through much the same thought processes, multiplied by about ten because I'm a chronic overthinker, except that I have no illusions about looking hot at my age! And in the end I didn't have any even half-decent shots so I took about 300 selfies and opted for one that's a bit fuzzy so you can't see the laughter lines in too much detail. Like Christine, I don't really want Big Internet to have that many photos of me so I now use the same photo almost everywhere.

To some extent yes. I think it helps build trust. But, some aspects of photography are highly subjective. That is, different people could have various opinions about one single photo.
