But even if they would, I wouldn't care. Most times I attach a TM of my own to be sure to keep any translated content for the future and apart from that I don't need the content of other translators because you can never rely on it. Even machine translation is in more than one way more reliable than the content of shared TMs (and yes, that should scare the hell out of every mediocre or bad translator out there).
No CAT tools here... | | |
They always lock some segments | Feb 21, 2023 |
They always lock some segments, and won't charge you for this segment, but I often find some mistakes.

The problem is: it doesn't. I guess those translators still win business with their rates. To answer the actual question: I must admit I don't entirely understand it :/ One of my clients makes their TM read-only in memoQ, but it's perfectly searchable and I can still attach my own TMs for my own purposes, so I'm perfectly fine with that. Another client locks 100% matches that have been there since the beginning of time, which I can also understand, since there have been instances where said "mediocre or bad translators" made unnecessary - and incorrect! - changes.

Some answers go like "they lock but allow downloading". Err... If they allow downloading, then what do they lock?
I do some work for an agency with their own CAT tools and they don't give you any WYSIWYG options, which is beyond comprehension. As for locking TMs... As if anyone would want to steal them LOL!!!

No, my clients don't lock anything. Neither CAT-tools nor platform profiles. For that matter we collaborate as usually.

[Edited at 2023-02-21 08:56 GMT] Right! I completely forgot about such cases! Sometimes I receive for translation project files containing locked segments (already translated). I just don't touch them. I inform the client about incorrect translation in the locked segments if any, offer my version of translation. Sometimes upon the client's preliminary approval I unlock these segments and correct the translations as agreed with the client.

Kevin Fulton United States Local time: 04:00 German to English I once quit a project over locked segments | Feb 21, 2023 |
For a number of years I undertook projects for a large European agency. On one assignment I was provided with a TM with locked segments. A number of them were incorrect – dangerously so. For example, the locked segment "Switch machine on" was followed by "Caution – wait until all components have stopped moving" and "Use a wrench ..." I reported this and other potentially hazardous errors to the PM who said under no circumstances was I to unlock and change the translations. An exchange of ema... I reported this and other potentially hazardous errors to the PM who said under no circumstances was I to unlock and change the translations. An exchange of email didn't resolve the issue, so I quit the project since I didn't want any liability and severed relations with that agency.

Tom in London United Kingdom Local time: 09:00 Member (2008) Italian to English I refuse to do bad work | Feb 21, 2023 |
I was recently sent a TM by an agency. It was full of really bad mistakes: basic terms of which anyone ought to know the correct translation. I refused and played no further part in this awful endeavour. I refuse to do a bad translation. ▲ Collapse
