you road test more than one tool, buy one of them, then later wish you'd bought one of the others instead (as the chosen tool didn't live up to expectations or other tools developed faster). Hasn't happened to me.

They probably mean that you buy one, try another, and then regret your purchase!

For my own particular needs, simple is best, and I find most CAT tools have too many bells and whistles, involve too great a learning curve and are too expensive for my purposes. I want my tools to be simple (idiot-proof) to learn and use, which is why I stuck with WF Classic. I don't think I really need anything else. The other options I tried out were too complicated or else I didn't like the user interface.

This illustrates the degree of technical support required. According to this random sample, Deja Vu comes out on top, followed by WF, with the "industry standard" Trados giving rise to most need for assistance.

After purchasing T for about USD1000 (with no technical support included, of course), I now wish I had purchased WF, which I will most probably use from now on.

I haven't test-driven any other tools because I suspect that would happen. In any event my choice of CAT is (annoyingly) more down to market forces than personal preference.

I use only one, my customers' tool of choice. I know only this one and so I have not compared it with others. Fortunately I have no regrets since it has brought in more work and helped streamline how I do work and make more money for me -- I do lots of manuals. So, it has not been an annoyance to me.
CAT tools. You either hate them or love them. It all boils down on the type of work you do.

The licence for the first CAT I was given to me by a client, I still use that for their projects. I immediately saw benefits but saw limitations in that specific software, I looked around in at what was available and bought my own to suit my own requirements. I purchased a second because it was in demand from several clients for large projects. I occasionally also work with other CAT tools on request of my clients too.

The point of test-driving (okay, testing or trying) a tool, a car, a software package trial version is that, it's a TRIAL, not a commitment to buy.
The concept is so simple I cannot begin to explain it in better terms.

Ergo, there is nothing else to try.
I do use a PC CAT tool that was given to me by a client. It suffices. As they require its use, I see no reason to test drive another, in which the client has no interest.

I bought a licence for a CAT tool about a year after I had started freelancing, then a few months later a client asked me to use MemoQ for a job and gave me a temporary licence for that. I have to admit I loved it and bought my own MemoQ licence soon after that. And yes, I did regret buying that other tool.
Luckily it wasn't the most expensive option available and it was tax-deductible but it still was a bit of a waste.

I might have gone for MemoQ if it had existed in a competitive form (or I had been aware of it) when I bought Wordfast, or if I had not worked with Trados for so many years first. But having come so far with Trados and Studio, I did not buy MemoQ.
