I'm pretty sure working with the PC has had some wear and tear on my vision. Most people's sight worsens with age and a few years ago I noticed it wasn't the quality of newsprint that was going down the tubes but my eyesight, after enjoying a lifetime of 50/50 clarity. I was told this is normal, but constant PC use as a translator has most likely contributed to this.
Some people's eyes may be more sensitive than others, but I'd advise anyone in my situation who is having bother to... I do think those all-nighters I used to do years ago accelerated the natural aging process though. I cannot work through the night anymore, because my eyes get sore.
One compelling reason I need a bigger screen: so that I can see the whole page at 120% - 130% of normal. Either that, or new specs.

however, i had laser surgery last year so my vision has gone from like 2 in each eye to 20 20. I do have to wear reading glasses for the computer. My eyes do get tired and blurry but because my vision has improved overall, it's hard to say!

I am not supposed to wear glasses, since my eyes have almost 10/10, but I have been using them since I was 6, so 32 years and without them my eyes get tired very quickly. Now, after this short introduction, I noticed my problem after a couple of days without glasses (my son did not understand how these small and thin objects could flex always a bit more!) so I noticed I had several problems in seeing things, and the doctor said that I have a problem related to the nerves, basically one of my eye... In fact, my vision has slightly improved...which might be due to age when short-sightedness sometimes eases. At least that's what the doctor told me.
Furthermore, I believe that the regular eye excercises help.

I was advised by an optometrist to alter my focal length regularly when working, by looking out of the window at things further away (as if I needed any encouragement), and go for walks on which I can look at different things at different distances. This is excellent exercise for the eyes. It helps deal with the issue of constantly looking at small areas of a screen at a regular distance.
The lengthening of the distance at which you can easily focus (presbyopia) is a common problem ... I've always been very long-sighted, so concentrating on the close-up screen probably forces my eyes to accommodate in a generally beneficial direction.
I had to start wearing reading glasses at 50, but have worked far more at the screen since than before - without noticeable deterioration.
If it had not been the screen, it would have been books and paperwork...

Went to the opticians this morning and he was not especially happy with me. He said I need to be taking much more frequent breaks from the screen. Although my eyes generally function very well, they are not in the best condition from poring over the minutiae of translations all day.

Via this blog (http://translationtimes.blogspot.com/2011/06/protect-your-vision.html) I found this tool (http://www.protectyourvision.org/), which activates your screensaver for a few minutes at allotted time intervals, at which point you should look away, get up, move around and give your eyes a proper rest.
The optician recommended 20 mins of work to 2 mins looking away, but I've opted for the 30 minutes - 3 minutes scheme under the "Custome" [sic] option.

really hard to say, all I know is that I now have to wear reading glasses for first time in my life and feel my eyesight is deteriorating badly since I've been spending more time in front of the screen. Opticians I've seen have blamed both (age and screen) but advise taking time off. Like Gilla, I really don't have to be encouraged to look out the window!
