Job description:

We are looking to appoint translators to work on an ongoing project with us. Each week for four weeks, we will have text in English from a series of anti-smoking campaigns. The content will be very straightforward and non-technical.

We will need this text translated urgently, and have a budget of £250 per week (i.e. £1,000 in total for each translator). If you are interested in taking on this work, please respond to this post stating:

-how many words you could translate in 1.5 days (the project timeline)
-your availability over the next few weeks (the project will start on Wednesday 9th September)
-your contact details

So the idea is that you would be paid £250 to translate this text for us each week, but we need to know how much you could translate in 1.5 days. The more, the better!

I just can't see any mention of how long the text(s) gonna be. Are they expecting me to do 10000 words for £250 or just 100 for the same price?

Is it just me missing something here?

Truly bizarre Sep 5, 2009

I also had the same thought Sep 5, 2009

I believe it's a steady rate and no matter the amount, you'll receive the same.
Of course everyone would be thrilled to translate 100 words for 250 £, but the other possibility does not seem so interesting...

It's the price for 3000 words I can do comfortably in 1.5 days.

probably they were expecting you to translate 10000 words at least in each 1.5 day period. Period.

They are simply going to select the person who "can" do the more in 1.5 days, to reduce the number of "weeks" as much as possible.
I have not even answered to them.

I did not answer because of the oddity of such an arrangement, but in my language pair a lot of translators decided otherwise:

Quotes received:
Total: 595
By language pair:

- English to Portuguese: 76

Advice Sep 6, 2009

My advice, if you are interested in the job, is to ask the outsourcer to clarify the length of the source text(s).

This could be an oversight Sep 6, 2009

In fact, I would not assume that they intentionally left off this bit of information. It was probably a mistake, so then applicants unfortunately need to ask this. That being said, yes of course it is essential information which should not be left out/overlooked.

Not that unusual Sep 6, 2009

I saw this job offer and I did send a bid. With ONG's, specially with large and medium sized-ONG, the different departments receive a certain amount of money per week/month for each campaign. So I just assumed that they have allocated 250 GBP per week for this campaign; logically, they will get translated whatever 250 GBP can buy them. I don't know if that's the case here, but it might.

Not that many. Actually I was contacted by the Agency today and they are expecting you to translate 3500 words in 1 day (not 1.5). Sounds like an urgent job to me.

I like that. :~))) Would be funny to send the job back once you reach £250 at your rate, probably somewhere half-way, in the middle of a sentence. :~)))
