Ein politisches Leitprinzip
Für die Bundesregierung ist Nachhaltigkeit ein politisches Leitprinzip: Je umfassender Nachhaltigkeit umgesetzt wird, desto mehr kann sie zum Motor für gesellschaftlichen und politischen Fortschritt werden.
Die vor uns liegenden Aufgaben erfordern in allen Bereichen unseres Lebens Änderungen, die in ihrer Tragweite oft mit den Veränderungen im Zuge der industriellen Revolution gleichgesetzt werden. Erleben wir heute die Vorboten einer solchen "großen Transformation"? Und falls ja: Wird es ein langsamer, unmerklicher Übergangsprozess oder werden nachfolgende Generationen diesen Wandel an einzelnen Ereignissen und Jahreszahlen festmachen?
Es liegt in unserer Hand, die Weichen dafür zu stellen, dass die Menschen heute, aber auch im Jahr 2050 in einer Welt leben können, in der wirtschaftlicher Wohlstand für alle einhergeht mit sozialem Zusammenhalt und dem Schutz der natürlichen Lebensgrundlagen – in einer Welt, die sich der Generationengerechtigkeit und dem friedlichen Miteinander der Völker verpflichtet fühlt.
Die bestehenden Herausforderungen sind groß
Wenn die gesamte Welt auf dem derzeitigen Niveau und nach dem Modell der Industrieländer leben wollte, würden die globalen Ressourcen nicht ausreichen. Wir in den Industriestaaten tragen Verantwortung auch für die Chancen der Menschen in anderen Ländern und dürfen soziale und ökologische Lasten unseres Wohlstands nicht auf sie abwälzen. Im Verhältnis zu nachfolgenden Generationen wurden bislang teilweise Wege beschritten, mit denen "die Zukunft beliehen" wurde. Vor diesem Hintergrund gilt es, mit aller Kraft Innovationen voranzubringen, neue Technologien zu entwickeln und nachhaltige Lebensweisen aufzuzeigen. Ziel ist es dabei, heute und in Zukunft allen Menschen die Chance auf ein Leben in Wohlstand, Gerechtigkeit und in einer intakten Umwelt zu ermöglichen.
Wollen wir unsere Lebensgrundlagen erhalten, müssen unsere Entscheidungen unter den drei Gesichtspunkten Wirtschaft, Umwelt und Soziales dauerhaft tragfähig sein. Wie erreichen wir fiskalische Nachhaltigkeit – national und in Europa? Wie stärken wir ein nachhaltiges Wirtschaften? Welche Schritte zum Schutz des Klimas und zur Beschleunigung der Energiewende stehen an? Wie bringen wir Nachhaltigkeit auf internationaler Ebene voran? Dies sind Beispiele für aktuelle Herausforderungen, vor denen die Politik heute steht.

A political guiding principle
For the Federal Government, sustainability is a political guiding principle. The more comprehensively sustainability is implemented, the more it can become the driving force of social and political progress.
The tasks facing us require, in all areas of our life, revolutionary changes whose momentous scope is often compared to the changes which took place during the course of the industrial revolution. Are we experiencing today the precursors of such a “great transformation”? And if the answer to that is yes, will it be a slow, subtle process of transition, or will the generations that follow us see this change exemplified in specific individual events and dates?
It is up to us to set the course so that people today, but also people living in the year 2050, can live in a world in which economic prosperity for all is accompanied by social cohesion and the protection of natural resources – in a world which feels a commitment to inter-generational fairness and the peaceful co-operation of peoples.
The challenges facing us are great
If the whole world wished to live at the current level, and following the model of the industrial nations, global resources would not be sufficient. We in the industrial nations also have a responsibility for the prospects of people in other countries and should not shift onto them the social and economic costs and consequences of our prosperity. As regards succeeding generations, some of the courses adopted to date have “drawn on the capiital of the future”. Against this background, the watchword must be to drive forward innovations with all our power, to develop new technologies and to point to sustainable ways of living. The aim of this is to afford all people, both today and in the future, the opportunity for living in prosperity, justice, and in an intact environment.
If we want to preserve the resources for our livelihood, the decisions we make under the three headings of economy, environment and social affairs must be permanently sustainable . How can we achieve fiscal sustainability – nationally and within Europe? How can we strengthen a sustainable system of economic activity? What are the next steps we need to take to protect the climate and speed up the energy revolution? How can we promote sustainability on an international level? These are examples of ongoing challenges which politics is facing today.

I'm returning to translating after a career/vocation break to train as an Anglican priest. Before that, I'd worked since 1994 as a freelance translator, translating everything from 8 books on German military history to the German Federal Government's submission to the World Conference on Sustainable Development.
As you might gather, I have, over the years, enjoyed translating all sorts of texts - and enjoyed the variety! I see myself very much in terms of being a [potential] “all-rounder”, with important specialisms; and this has over the years been borne out by experience and valued by clients...
From 2000-2005 I was a Visiting Lecturer at City University, London, teaching e-learning courses preparing students for taking the professional translation examinations for membership of the Institute of Linguists. This work covered a very broad spectrum of translation expertise over a wide field of source texts, from broadly ‘literary’, through to narrowly technical; and of course required of me, as teacher, guide and commentator, a familiarity with a very wide range of subject-matter and associated issues. So, once again, a testimony to that variety and versatility which for me makes the work so enjoyable as well as challenging.
I think my tagline, "Sense AND Sensibility..." best echoes that experience - Accuracy ['Sense'] is vital, but it's how it works with the feel that comes from background knowledge of context, culture, and just sensitivity ['Sensibility'] - and combining the two, which makes the pulse race...!
