I am a freelance translator from French, Spanish and Catalan into English (native language English) specialising in medical fields. This is based on many years' experience of working within the UK National Health Service. My principal fields of sub-specialty within the general medical field are General Surgery, especially Upper Gastro-intestinal Surgery, and Obstetrics & Gynaecology. In addition I have spent shorter periods of time working within the specialties of Cardiology, ENT, General Medicine, Haematology and Orthopaedics. In 2000 I gained the Certificate of Medical Terminology (with Distinction) from the AMSPAR (Association of Medical Secretaries, Practice Managers and Receptionists).
I believe that my experience of hospitals and hospital procedures enables me to offer a reliable and well informed service to clients looking for translation of medically-related texts. I have an AMD Athlon 1.5Ghz computer with Microsoft Windows XP, Adobe Acrobat Reader and high-speed broadband internet & e-mail connection.
In addition to my BA Honours Degree in Modern Languages (main languages French and Spanish) from Bradford University, which had a 75% weighting towards Translation & Interpreting, I am holder of the Institute of Linguists (IOL) Diploma in Translation, which I gained in French into English in 2007 (with Merits in Papers 1 and 2 (Technology option), and Pass in Paper 3 (Science option)). I have so far been successful in 2 papers (2 (Technology option) and 3 (Science option)) of the Spanish into English Diploma in Translation and am due to sit Paper 1 in January 2010.
I am always keen to take part in Professional Development courses, conferences, workshops, seminars, lectures, etc. organised by the UK's two professional language bodies, the CIOL and the ITI (Institute of Translation & Interpreting). I am an Associate Member of both ITI and CIOL and subscribe to their Code of Professional Practice for translators.
