Not really excited or stressed, but anything below "interested" should be the point of looking for another trade unless one can afford to retire immediately, IMHO.
I guess I should add that even if content is not particulary interesting than at least certain linguistic achievements should offer some comfort. Or the invoice bottom line:-)

depending on the text I'm translating and my state of mind
I can be bored, interested, excited, stressed, tired, ecstatic or even feel like a robot! not all at the same time, of course!
Right now, I'm ecstatic, but only because I finished an (interesting) translation quicker than I thought and I'm going to have an unexpected weekend...

I could say, I (used to) get all of the feelings mentioned (but not necesseraly within the same act of translation). at the moment unfortunatly (but the moment lasts for some 2 weeks already) I feel just TIRED and I feel like sending all the unfinished documents back, appologizing myself and disappearing or whatever...

I usually feel interested. I even feel the need to go deeper into some subjects I translate about, just out of curiosity.
Many times I feel excited. I translate news releases so many times I read things that are going to be posted/disclosed later. That is exciting. Some releases are very interesting and exciting at the same time, for instance, I translated the first press release sent from an aircraft by email, ye... See more I usually feel interested. Of course some translations are more interesting than others, but we are lucky to be able to say that 99% of the stuff we translate is actually quite interesting and keeps us up to date about many matters.

Sometimes I go overboard--a book on a china factory in Puerto Rico started me searching for "Caribe China" products on eBay, and I've bought a few!
Sometimes the interest dies quickly when the project is done--I never even considered getting a tattoo.
Sometimes the interest level is low while I'm working but resurfaces later--a cell phone whose ads I translated turned out to be a great phone when I happened to acquire one.
The old saying "You learn something new every day" is a reality for a freelance translator, and I love it!

A weird combination of several of the options sometimes, but definitely somewhere around interested. I mean, instruction manuals... sure, I'm only interested in the invoicing part. But those marketing texts are downright fascinating. I often find myself wondering why I don't own this product or another yet!

I'd like to be euphoric most of the time, but I guess there's not enough of the kind of work I'm going after on the market. Since I'm a workaholic, most of the time, it's a mix between interested and stressed. I seldom feel bored, as I have enough work offers to get to pick what I find most interesting. However, when I have to work on projects of 80,000 words, no matter how interesting it is, some days I end up feeling bored. Too much of a good thing can also be the same as not enough.

Most of the time, I feel interested and I like the texts that I have to translate. Obviously, I can not deny that some subjects are boring but in that case, I try to look for the interesting things about that subject in particular. Well, at least, I try to see the positive side

The feelings I experience while translating have nothing to do with the choices offered! I guess I should describe the state of mind that comes about when I am translating.
95% of my awake time, my brain is constantly searching for "food for thought." It just won't take it easy! Unless I have a few bottles of beer or glasses of wine

So, translation is a perfect fit for me, because it occupies 100% of my brainpower. I feel great doing it. I don't know the right words, in any language, to describe my condition.
If anything, I feel ABSORBED in the process. And it's a good feeling. Most of the time. ▲ Collapse
