Pit slopes will be gradual through the softer rock and steepen in the harder fresh rock. A series of generic stability models were analysed to determine slope heights and angles to achieve a suitable minimum Factor of Safety. The bench geometry is specific to the weathering profile and slope height. Final bench heights are 15 m between berms and 20 m in fresh rock.
The design bench face angles are shown in Figure 6. These are first pass only and likely to steepen with more test work.

OK. In the 'stepped' mining of an open-pit mine, a berm is the horizontal surface and the bench is the more or less vertical surface of the 'step' and/or the volume of material between two successive berms. See diagram.
It stands to reason that the 'bench face angle' is the slope of the face of the bench, also given as 'bank angle' in the accompanying diagram, i.e. the angle of that face from horizontal or, pretty much, from the plane of the berm. Note that in the second illustration attached, the angle du front de taille is the reciprocal of the angle defined above.

[Just to confuse matters, 'berm' is also said of a windrow of spoil, or large boulders, or large concrete blocks placed along the edge of a haulage road as a safety measure, i.e. to signal the edge of the road more than to actually stop a massive quarry hauler going over the edge].
