Translation of an American novel into French. Chapter 2 opens with a brief description of the author's time at college.
"All my life, I have been a creature of habit. In college, when other students scoured the catalog for afternoon classes to accommodate their idiosyncratic sleep schedules, I was the one who set the alarm for seven so I could ***hit the gym and the commons*** before a 9:00 a.m. lecture."
There's no more context re "commons." I know that "dining hall" is a possible translation but am not at all sure here. Thx for suggestions. Perhaps "campus"?
(My language pair says "French to English", which is normally the case but not this time.

« Restaurant universitaire » est peu utilisé par les étudiants eux-mêmes (à part peut-être dans une lettre adressée à l'administration de l'université par exemple). Tous disent « resto U » dans la vie de tous les jours et ils l'écrivent aussi. Reste à savoir si le ton du texte s'y prête mais ça me semble être le cas.
Même le CROUS les appelle désormais officiellement « Resto U' » avec une apostrophe. Dans ce cas c'est plutôt un nom propre.

: Sounds spot-on to me / Actually, a slight tweak maybe, because "Hit" is kind of slang, so maybe "se taper une séance à la salle de sport" or similar?

CROUS or Restaurants universitaires
In the UK it would probably be the Student Union - where the various leisure and food outlets would be found. In France the cafeteria or Pause-repas, I guess if it's before lectures the narrator isn't going to a bar...probably!

: Unless it's about a French university, "CROUS" makes no sense at all - ways too "French-specific" to be used anywhere elsewhere - as it would falsely imply "CROUS" is some kind of "universal institution" you'll find everywhere in the world.

"Réfectoire" is another term for Restaurant Universitaire which is often used in the context of university/high school. It is proposed as a specific translation of "commons" in Wordreference. I guess "Campus" might work but since it seems the author is talking about habits and doing specific things in the morning, it would make sense that they would want to go to the gym and to eat before class.

Yes, dining hall is possible for "commons" but not sure about that time in the morning. When I dined "on Commons" at my university (in Dublin) it was only possible at dinner time
I think "campus" is good if there is no further clear context
