French term

traitement anti-comitial

French to English Medical Medical: Health Care
Case (judgment) about damages due to accident involving bodily injuries. The main victim was a child and the effects seem to have been life-changing.

"Son état a nécessité également une prise en charge psychothérapique, puis de façon différée, neurologique, en raison de la constatation d'une épilepsie post-traumatique nécessitant un traitement anti-comitial au long cours."

No medical expert. This looks like "anti-convulsive treatment".

Discussion

@ Kim Very nice from your side to participate in the discussion and to provide a lot of references for for preferred term. You would have much more space to quote the full context, rather than abbreviated sentence fragments from an old dictionary with a lot of obsolete terms, e.g.

anticonvulsant. I. (Adj.) Preventing or arresting convulsions. 2. (Noun) A drug that prevents or stops convulsions, primarily those of an epileptic nature.

comitial. Obsolete syn. for epileptic. Ling.: This adjective was originally used in the term "comitial disease" to designate grand mal*. At present it is used both substantively and adjectivally (especially in the Romance languages), with the meaning extended to all forms of epilepsy, when the true nature of the disease is to be concealed from a patient.

convulsions. 2. (Noun) A drug that prevents or stops convulsions, primarily those of an epileptic nature.

echo, epileptic. An obsolete term, uncommon in English, used to describe stereotyped epileptic automatisms*. See seizure, automatic epileptic anticonvulsant.

traitement anticonvulsivant (traitement anti-comitial)

Nice to know:

Etymology
From Latin comitialis.
comitial (not comparable)
1. (in Ancient Rome) Of or pertaining to a comitia.
2. (by extension) Of or pertaining to a political assembly.

ABSTRACT
Gabapentin (GBP) is a new antiepileptic agenta with an original spectrum of activity. Its mechanism of action has not yet been fully elucidated but appears not to involve binding to GABA receptors despite being a structural analogue of GABA and is distinct from tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). It has been shown to modulate high threshold calcium currents in brain neurons. As some other anticonvulsants, GBP has been recently proposed for the treatment of non-cancer neuropathic pain like diabetic neuropathy and post herpetic neuralgia (double blind studies with placebo).

anticonvulsive (anti-comital) treatment

Sorry for not having posted the English term but the equivalent French term. In order to suggest the English term, I have to inverse the languages and to repost it. The references apply to both language directions and are therefore repeated. Since I had little time to look for more relevant references a few days ago, I hereby catch up and add them.

From the context, I understand that it is not so much a question of curing epilepsy, but of giving the epileptic seizure an anticonvulsive treatment.

The most common type (60%) of seizures are convulsive which involve involuntary muscle contractions.[25] Of these, one-third begin as generalized seizures from the start, affecting both hemispheres of the brain and impairing consciousness.[25] Two-thirds begin as focal seizures (which affect one hemisphere of the brain) which may progress to generalized seizures.[25] The remaining 40% of seizures are non-convulsive. An example of this type is the absence seizure, which presents as a decreased level of consciousness and usually lasts about 10 seconds.[2][26]

The mainstay treatment of epilepsy is anticonvulsant medications, possibly for the person's entire life.[11][25] The choice of anticonvulsant is based on seizure type, epilepsy syndrome, other medications used, other health problems, and the person's age and lifestyle.

Note from asker:
Thanks. I don't think the Proz gloss entries are sufficiently reliable sources. Anyone could be writing any old rubbish unfortunately.
That second reference doesn't give an English term. It talks of "lutter contre l'épilepsie" ... but that may not imply "anticonvulsive" treatment: I have no idea.

Because I don't believe in posting translations for terms that are already in the glossary. It just encourages people to keep asking questions that have been asked already. And a link to a previous question is not an answer, it's a reference entry.
