German term

Regierungsschuloberrat (vs. Regierungsschulrat)

German to English Other Education / Pedagogy
Hi all,

I have a list of Amtsbezeichnungen (with no further context) that includes the terms
Regierungsschuloberrat/Regierungsschuloberrätin
and
Regierungsschulrat/Regierungsschulrätin

(other items on the list include Studienrat/Studienrätin, Regierungsschuldirektor/Regierungsschuldirektorin, Leitender Regierungsschuldirektor/Leitende Regierungsschuldirektorin)

The Regierungsschuloberrat and Regierungsschulrat are doing my head in, as I cannot seem to figure out exactly what they are, leave alone the difference between them. Would much appreciate if anyone could shed some light.

Thanks in advance.

Emily Plank (asker) Feb 9, 2023:
Yes, I am trying to avoid 'Government' where possible. If you have translated Regierungsschuldirektor as School Principal, then what would you say for Oberschulrektor? Because that is another of the items and I had that one as Principal. Perhaps more a President or Vice Chancellor?! (this list is a nightmare)
Lancashireman Feb 9, 2023:
Government? In Germany, education is organised at Bundesland (i.e. state government) level. I think the use of 'government' (suggesting federal level) would be misleading here and is therefore best omitted. Likewise Regierungsschuldirektor, which is once again a reference to pay grade.
Emily Plank (asker) Feb 9, 2023:
Thanks. One of the other list items was 'Leitender Regierungsschuldirektor', which seemed to have a similar translation though, so I am having trouble distinguishing between them all!
TDVTrans Feb 9, 2023:
how about this I would go with 'Chief Government Inspector of Schools' for Regierungsschuloberrat and
Government Inspector of Schools for Regierungsschulrat.
My level of confidence is not super high but I think this may fit here.

Senior School Inspector (vs. School Inspector)

It seems to be a difference in pay grade (Besoldungsgruppe)
You will find them both listed here:
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Besoldungsordnung_A
Regierungsschulrat = School Inspector (A13)
Regierungsschuloberrat = Senior School Inspector (A14)

Re Oberschulrektor
The Besoldungsordnung web page lists the following
Oberschulrektor

Depending on national terminology, an Oberschule is a high school or secondary school, and the Rektor is the Principal or Head Teacher.

Once again, I would recommend including the pay grade in brackets, as this obviously represents seniority. In this case, Oberschulrektor = Secondary School Principal (A14).
High School is best avoided IMO because of a) English 'public' (i.e. private) school connotations; b) USA connotations; c) potential confusion with DE Hochschule = university.
Note from asker:
Thanks. One of the other list items was 'Leitender Regierungsschuldirektor' though, and the translations I found for that seemed to also be on the lines of Senior School Inspector, so I am having trouble distinguishing between all of these!
