Wireless networks are available in many public places, often referred to as hot spots. The wireless networks usually allow internet access, sometimes with restrictions set by the owner of the network.
As you may know, there are both "open" and "locked" wireless networks.

In a locked network, the information is encrypted when sent between your device and the network’s base station.
To connect to a locked network, you must enter the network password.
The risk of eavesdropping is smaller in locked networks, but there is still a risk that the owner of the base station is listening in to the network traffic.

Locked networks protected by a password may use different types of encryption, some better than others. Modern wireless networks use encryption called WPA & WPA2.
