A better term would be armored fighting vehicle (IFV), versus APC

Diferences between APC and ICV include:

1. An APC is designed and used primarily to carry a small number of infantry troops inside into the combat zone("battle taxi" a la the US Army's old M-113). APC usualy has light, if any armament of its own (i.e., a machine gun mounted on the top and used for defensive purposes).

2. The APC can halt on the battlefield so the troops inside can then exit and fight on foot

3. If the APC keeps moving, the infantry troops can arise inside and fight as they can while exposed on top of the APC. That is is not a sound, safe or effective tactic, as the troops are wasting ammunition while firing their weapons from a moving and bouncing platform.

4. An ICV is designed, equipped, armored, armed and used for conducting an attack. Troops can aim and frie weaoins form inside (through side firign ports) and the crew of the ICV can also fire its organic heavy wezpons / missiles and/or provide fire support to its dismounted and maneuvering troops.

Examples are the BMP and BMD series of ICV and US Bradley ICV.

ICVs design also includes considerably heavier and better armor protection than do APC.
