Samraat
Afrikaans to English

Name of house
This is the name of a house in the South of England - no other context, except that the owners may have been South African. I initially thought that this was a variation on something like the Dutch of 'Samenraad' for a Council Chamber, but can find no confirmation, other than - incongruously - an Indian-Bengali name to describe a boy....
I would be grateful if anyone could confirm it is or isn't Afrikaans and does have that gathering-in-council meaning. It is for a UK land search.

Samraat
Not an Afrikaans word. Seems to be a Hindi word. See google reference. It is common for people in South Africa to give names to their houses, often in other, and even relatively obscure/very foreign languages. Although in this case I suspect a Malaysian connection also, as Afrikaans borrows a LOT from Malaysian. Could also be derived from samrat.

Comment: "Dank U and thank you. I had also noticed the Samrat alternative, mainly as a name of Indian restaurants in and around London."
