The government tightened containment measures as the pandemic worsened, including screening at ports of entry, quarantine for infected people, and closure of public places for gathering. It later introduced strict social distancing measures and placed Kabul and some other cities under lockdown, which it extended for two weeks on April 12. Daily movements have been restricted to those deemed essential. Trade and transportation have been disrupted, and containment measures are inhibiting domestic activity, putting at risk the livelihoods of vulnerable households. Border closures and panic-buying led to a temporary spike in prices of some foodstuffs which abated after private wholesalers boosted supply at the government’s request. The government has taken steps to replace wheat imports lost due to border closures with purchases from Central Asia.
