To claim that a 'brise côtière' is 'generated by the coast' is a little bit of a simplifcation, inasmuch as it is a phenomenon that occurs indirectly because of the presence of the coast. By the same token, it could be said that swell occurs indirectly because of the presence of the shallower coastal waters, causing behaviour quite different from deep-water 'oceanic swell'. So I think that particular argument is tenuous in the extreme, and I would be more convinced if you could locate any references that use your suggested term attributively, with no other qualification — i.e. where it could not be a plausible translation of 'swell in coastal areas'. Please do enlighten me!
In the case here, we are faced with 2 translation suggestions, and with your indulgence, I would like to expand slightly on my analysis of the translation issues here. Let me strat by saying that the attributive use in the source text here 'coastal swell' is an exceedingly common construction in EN, and one that I realize is somewhat less so in FR; however, the back translation of your suggestion would be 'swell in coastal areas', which has a different nuance of meaning, equally possible to render in EN; why then, did the source text writer choose one over the other? (cont.)
I am deeply saddened that you should be feeling this way, and let me reassure you that nothing could be farther from the truth. let me state publicly here and now that I have terrific admiration for your extensive technical knoweldge, and of course your superlative mastery of your native language, far superior to any level to which I might ever hope to aspire. You have ample evidence of this in the numerous instance where i have agreed with your suggestions — at least, where I have felt competent to make ay comment.
But surely in the true spirit of co-operation and brainstorming that ought to reign among fellow-professionals here in KudoZ, it ought to be possible to discuss some of the unuances of language that are what make our job so interesting — and sometimes frustrating!
