Seems to closely mirror the intent of the Spanish. The issue here is not any kind of *conscious decision* on the part of Japan to "give way" (as an overly literal interpretation of "tuvo que ceder" would suggest) but rather of "relenting before an overwhelming force."


"to leave in the dust" = to leave one far behind, as in a race or competition
