French term

"justification sismique"

French to English Tech/Engineering Energy / Power Generation Nuclear power plant safety
"L’installation est redevable d’une justification sismique"

Term seems to be used specifically by EDF in the context of earthquake protection for nuclear power stations.

It's clear enough what it is: a kind of "earthquake-proof certification" — the use of the word 'justification' for a physical document is really what's causing me most trouble here.

I could invent something, but I was kind of hoping somebody might be able to tell me if there is any kind of existing 'official' translation, preferably as used by EDF!

FWIW, this is found in a very long and complex CCTP for technical equipment.

@ Terry, @ Didier Thanks a lot, Terry!

And thanks too, Didier — that's very helpful, I wish I'd managed to find that document sooner! Only slight drawback, though, is that this site in itself is generally poorly translated, so sadly cannot be regarded as authoritative :-(

Par contre "calcul sismique"<-"design earthquake calculation"
Terry Richards Oct 7, 2012:
EDF glossary Tony,

I have an EDF glossary and "justification" occurs several times. In each case, it is translated as "supporting documentation".

However, I'm not sure that fits your context but I offer it up for your consideration.

Personally, I prefer kashew's "qualification" in this case.

seismic qualification

Note from asker:
Thanks a lot, J, this is certainly a strong contender; as you have astutely evaluated the context, we are indeed talking here about confirmation that equipment, plant, etc. is 'earthquake-proof'
Peer comment(s):

agree Claire Cox : Yes, I'd go with this too: and I have come across justifications used in the sense of supporting documentation before too

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks a lot, J, for your answer, and the extremely useful reference which also helped me for some other terms! In the end, this wasn't the term I finally used, although I do think it would be applicable in many contexts."

seismic safety case

Another thought: my ex-husband used to work for NNC, the nuclear power station designers, and he was always talking about safety cases. Sure enough, they do seem to talk about seismic safety cases: I wonder if that would work here?

Note from asker:
Thanks, Claire, for your obviously authoritative input! I didn't use this solution in the end, as I had trouble finding references that tied it closely enough to my very specific context. I feel sure this would indeed be the correct answer in some contexts, but wasn't confident enough about it in mine ;-)

Imho

"The installation is held liable for a seismic justification " is the translation of first line of given text.

Note from asker:
Thank you for your contribution. Sadly, the literal translation would not be applicable in this context, where 'justification' has a very specific technical meaning.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Kim Metzger : The asker no doubt knows how to translate the term word-for-word, but is specifically asking if there is an "official" translation used by EDF.
