More context would help in deciding what tone to strike. Why do you say this particular phrase is likely to appear "whenever" (= каждый раз) people are talking about the press and journalism?
If you want the translation to refer especially to journalism, substitute "in the world of journalism" for "in the literary world."
By the way, what's the difference in Russian between "акулы пера" and "киты пера"? Does акула have any negative connotation in this context? I ask, because of course the expressions "journalistic sharks," "journalistic barracudas" also exist.

: "whales of the literary world" sounds pretty good and doesn't have negative connotation that "shark" has in English. "Whale" was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this question.

Thanks, Angela. But I wasn't proposing "whales" (which I think sounds odd), only asking about "киты" vs. "акулы" in Russian, to understand better if "акулы" had any negative tone in this context. In any event, I do think that "big fish" is more idiomatic.
