German to English Science Engineering (general) research
This is how an organisation is billing itself in its marketing. It's tempting to assume something like "for the long term" is meant, but the phrase "auf Zeit" oin its own generally indicates a temporary, rather than longer-term, basis for something. What might it mean in this context?

This is a pun/play on words The company is a "Zeitarbeitsfirma" that supplies temporary staff, hence "auf Zeit". This is of course difficult to translate literally. As this is a "Werbespruch" that is probably used a lot, one has to be careful to choose a worthy english version.

a partner ... as long as a partner is needed. Nothing permanent. Maybe for three months, maybe for a year or more.

Yes Andy that's what is meant (and what I meant). But, as a non-native speaker, I cannot help with a nice translation. On demand and bespoke seem to be quite close. It's not "current" or "state of the art".

The context is a short text describing the services of this research company, which develops specific solutions for clients in collaboration with a number of universities. A similar googled phrase - Ihr Partner auf Zeit - appears often enough, eg: "Wir verstehen uns als Ihr Partner auf Zeit", or "Wir sind Ihr Partner auf Zeit. Ein Partner, der Ihr Unternehmen sichert und Sie so lange begleitet, bis die Zeichen wieder stabil auf Grün stehen." - seeming to imply langfristig rather than kurzfristig - that's my problem - can it mean that?

The German "auf Zeit" means temporary or for a certain period. They mean s.th. like "Wir sind Ihre ... auf Zeit". IMO, it refers to a company that provides research services to other companies "for a certain period" (outsourced research services), irrespective of whether for a short or long period (this will depend on the relevant outsourcing contract). Perhaps it fits your context?
