The B-double is a combination consisting of a tractor unit with a fifth wheel, a short semitrailer with a fifth wheel and a regular semitrailer at the rear. Apart from allowing lower costs per tonne-kilometre, the combination also reduces the environmental impact since fewer vehicles are required to achieve the same payload.

A tractor unit, traction unit, road tractor or prime mover (Australian English) is a heavy-duty vehicle, usually with a large diesel engine and two or three axles. Many three axle prime movers have the engine drive through both rear axles for better road grip on bad roads, construction sites etc.
