"يوم انتشرتم في الجنوب بعد غياب قسري دام نحو خمسة وثلاثين عاماً، تكرّست وحدتكم الوطنية وأنتم في موقعكم الطبيعي تقومون بأداء مهمتكم الأساسية دفاعاً عن حياض الوطن وذوداً عن سيادته واستقلاله، ومهمتكم هذه، لم تحل دون بقائكم مضطلعين بمهامكم في الداخل حفاظاً على مسيرة الأمن والاستقرار وصوناً للوحدة الوطنية."
I looked for the word in Al-Mawrid and was unpleasantly surprised. Is this guy illiterate and means حياد or is there a meaning for this word other than, err, you know what!

No, Sam, he is not illiterate...
I just checked the word حوض, and one of its plurals is حياض (in addition to أحواض and حيضان)
This plural is used esp. in the sense of "(sacred) ground, area, domain (to be protected), sanctum"
