Non-PRO English Other Other
Could you please tell me what does mean" positive mode" in the following sentence:
we saw in chapter 1) suggests that the quip by the executive pitched the management team's emotional centers into a positive range of activity. This, presumably, helped the group avoid becoming ... how he was keeping them on track in a positive mode. As we have already noted, the artful use of humor typifies effective leadership. That doesn't mean that you should always ..."
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (2): Balasubramaniam L., RHELLER

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Dear conejo:whole of this sentence is as follows:
This humor, presumably, helped the group avoid becoming emotionally hijacked by fixating on the problem- the marketing chief's error- thus letting them swiftly move on to the solution. And executive did all that without having to say anything explicity about how he was keeping them on track in a positive mode. positive frame of mind

It means, the humourous comment made by the executive helped the management team to assume a positive frame of mind. It means they began to approach problems with an optimistic attitude, hopeful attitude.

In the light of your added context, this is how I reconstruct the scene:

The marketing chief is not too happy with how the product is selling and he has painted a gloomy picture of the whole thing. The entire team is in this frame of mind and is unable to think up any solution as to how the situation could be turned around. Just then this executive cracks a joke which dispells the gloominess and people come back into a positive frame of mind and soon arrive at a suitable solution to the problem.

All this happens so naturally that no one is even aware that the executive had made any conscious effort at steering the group back into the right frame of mind.

agree conejo : Both Ziad's and B's comments could be right: It depends on the entire context, of which we are given only part.

agree Tony M : Yes, partly; but it doesn't just mean that 'his way of keeping them on track was positive', but also, that they were 'on track in a positive direction'

positive mode versus negative mode
When a person or a management team is in negative mode, everything seems bad and hopeless, as if there is NO way to change the situation; when the group mindset is in positive mode, people start getting creative, thinking "out of the box", and solutions appear where there were none before.
