Title of anthology
Title of anthology of poems by I.A.Bunin which was given to me for my birthday. Somehow, "testamentary lyre" doesn't sound right! Maybe "treasured verses" is closer, but I'd be interested in native opinion. The title of the introduction is Лирика И.А.Бунина.

BTW: Я не могу точно судить о чувствах Бунина, но Пушкин под \"заветной лирой\" точно имел в виду именно нечто \"священное\", а не \"сладенькое, душевненькое...\"

Впрочем, приведенная мною цитата относится к Пушкину, причем в этом произведении \"заветная лира\" произнесена весьма патетически.
Вполне допускаю, что в лирике Бунина имеется в виду гораздо более \"домашняя\" заветность лиры.

Кстати, наверняка название этого сборника стихов \"Заветная лира\" заимствовано у Пушкина, и не имеет собственной связи с содержимым самой поэзии Бунина. А Пушкинский \"Нет, весь я не умру...\" - это весьма патетическое произведение, и \"Sacred lyre\" вполне соответствует этому контексту.

I might have known Pushkin had a hand in this! My classical education is obviously lacking, since I did not associate "lyre" with "lyric poetry". Neither does the Encyclopaedia Britannica, but the full Oxford English Dictionary put me straight!
Now all I have to do is read the poems and maybe ask more questions..."

Я вот почему не согласна с sacred - и заодно с тов. Берлиным. Все же в русском языке понятия \"заветный\" и \"святой\", \"свяшенный\" весьма отличаются.
Заветная чарочка, заветный платочек или священная война, святая обязанность - есть разница.
А.С. Пушкин был непримирим к неточностям - достаточно почитать его комментарии к каждой строке Батюшкова.
