I don't think there's anything inherent to the font that makes me dislike it so much, it's more a case of familiarity breeding contempt.

I quite like the ultra light fonts like Helvetica Neue Ultra Light. Arial always works for me in a pinch.

I'm sure we all agree that we have to stick to the client's fonts as long as they are in the roman alphabet. If I don't like them, it actually feels painful.

For my personal work, I'm exceedingly fussy. I use Calibri in my e-mails, but Cambria for certain addressees. For a book I have just written, I originally chose Book Antigua, but the colon was so close to the preceding letter that I shifted to Palatino Linotype, which is very similar.

For chunks of text, studies have shown that serifs are easier on the eye. Of the serif faces, IMO the lines are too fat in Times New Roman. Cambria, a little less so. The trend seems to be toward thinner lines. That's why I like Book Antigua and Palatino Linotype. Garamond is the prevailing choice for most books, but to me the letters are small for the space they occupy.
