I just downloaded and started using MemoQ 2014. I have been using the previous version for some time.

Has anyone else noticed this problem, and do you have a suggestion to get around it?
I am searching online for information on the issue, but I honestly don't know how to even phrase it correctly to get relevant search results (assuming they exist).

Hi Chris,
Can I ask you to send this description to support at kilgray (dot) com? I think it must be a bug or something. Please state what IME you are using.

Same problem here

Yes, I have the same problem with the latest version. I'm having to use an older version because the IME issue is crippling.
I've reported this issue to support, but they're in no hurry to fix it. I wonder if you'd like to offer a refund to Japanese users who can't take advantage of the upgrades that we pay for?
