If there's anyone that translates 1000+ words per hour, I'd like some lessons, please (I can 'only' do 400-600).
300-400 words (no CAT tools) | Aug 3, 2023 |
My average is 300-400 words per hour, but I can do a lot more if the source language is French or Spanish and if I’m very familiar with the subject matter. Yesterday, it took me 8 hours to translate and review 5,133 words FR-PT on migration.

It depends on the text and format... etc.

It depends on various factors... | Aug 3, 2023 |
But if you translate 1000+ words per hour, then just hope nobody will actually read them.

Judging by your profile, you are already on the right track. Another 20 years of full-time translation work in your favourite subject field, and you will do 1000+. Practice makes perfect.

Although I am now at 400 words, I am not yet fully satisfied. For some projects my output could have been better.

Zero. Greece always shuts down at this time of year and, as usual, I have to find other ways of spending my time (currently rewriting my music management software).
I expect work to start picking up again after August 15.

I tried to look it up, but didn't manage to find any relevant information. What's the name of your program, may I ask?

hourly rate of human written translation: that's something new
The translation process consists in changing known words and expressions source to target + unknown time for research in the source and the target languages, research process being itself a complex procedure.

@ those who talk about 300 to 400 words/hour.
Do you count research, revision and maybe reading your text before you start working or is this just raw output ?
300-600 English words | Aug 4, 2023 |
But more often on the 400-600 side when the content doesn't require excessive polishing or research.
As a CAT-tooler, a word when talking productivity is a word paid at my full rate (a.k.a. a "weighted word"). The value of a "fuzzy word" depends on the discount grid applied.
About 800 English words/hour on the first draft with voice recognition software (and keyboard) to get an overall view of the text from beginning to end, then the real work starts.

It doesn't have a name and it's not marketed - or even marketable. It's just something I did for myself.
Some years ago I moved all my music collection on to solid state storage, uploaded all the CDs and so on. Then I wrote some custom software to find my way through it, allow various kinds of selection for playlists, etc. My own version of what I imagine iTunes to be, except that I have full control over it (I am not an Apple user, and never will be).
Currently, I'm writing a new version that will run on Linux. I enjoy doing a bit of coding as a change from translation/editing.

Anyone who might be wondering whether their output is reasonable or not, whether agencies should expect you to translate the text within that time or not, slow beginners who are wondering whether there's any chance of earning more than minimum wage one day...
